Places signified on maps at one time can lose significance. Place names change and new ones emerge. This post is about reading a 19th century map to collect place names and position them geographically so they can be plotted on maps from other time periods to gain insight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below is a partial, georectified map of Union Township, Berks County Pennsylvania, 1876.[1]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jeffblackadar.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/1876_PA_Berks_Union_Township_clip.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jeffblackadar.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/1876_PA_Berks_Union_Township_clip-1024x690.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-400\"\/><\/a><figcaption> <em>Union Township, Berks County Pennsylvania, 1876.[1]<\/em> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Microsoft\u2019s Azure Cognitive Services can transcribe the text on the map, such as listed below. Dr. Shawn Graham&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/shawngraham.github.io\/dhmuse\/detecting-handwriting\/\">documented how<\/a>&nbsp;to set up Azure Cognitive Services. The python code I am using is linked at the end of the post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">H.Beard\nF. Mostaller- \nH.Hirtint \n260 \nSCHOOL DIST. \nH.Shingle \nEisprung \nNo. 1 \nA. Wamsher\n... etc.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>For each line of text Azure Cognitive Services recognizes on the map, Azure returns coordinates of a rectangle in the image where the text appears. Here is the map with an overlay of recognized text:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jeffblackadar.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/download-2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jeffblackadar.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/download-2-1024x693.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-386\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Map with an overlay of computer recognized text. Each blue rectangle represents the region where Azure Cognitive Services found text.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This map is a georectified tif provided by Dr. Ben Carter. Given we have pixel x,y coordinates for the image and know its geographic coordinate reference system is 32129 we can transform the image pixel coordinates into geographic ones and save them in a shapefile. The shapefile can then be plotted on other maps, like below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jeffblackadar.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/hopewell_pa_basemap_with_1876_places.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jeffblackadar.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/hopewell_pa_basemap_with_1876_places-1024x666.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-387\"\/><\/a><figcaption><em>Line_text.shp plotted on a basemap<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I also plotted the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/jeffblackadar.ca\/charcoal_hearths\/line_text.zip\">line_text<\/a>&nbsp;shapefile on&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/webmap\/viewer.html?url=https%3A%2F%2Fimagery.pasda.psu.edu%2Farcgis%2Frest%2Fservices%2Fpasda%2FPAMAP_Hillshade%2FMapServer&amp;source=sd\">ArcGIS on-line map viewer<\/a>. I clicked&nbsp;<strong>Modify Map<\/strong>&nbsp;and zoomed to the area of interest:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jeffblackadar.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jeffblackadar.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-1024x491.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-389\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Modify Map<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I clicked,&nbsp;<strong>Add | Add Layer<\/strong>&nbsp;from File and selected the zip of the line_text shapefile to import it. Wamsher in 1876.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As seen above, some places labelled in 1876 are not immediately evident on current maps. The place labelled A. Wamsher likely was a farm. Today this area is within Pennsylvania\u2019s French Creek State Park. It appears to be a forest, perhaps second-growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adding PAMAP Hillshade shows additional features. It\u2019s speculation, but are the ridges and depressions shown on the hillshade image remains of A.
